Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A Caslon pulled in at the sides. Ertekin Erdin started from Libre Caslon Text, the web Caslon by Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida, and narrowed it, because good condensed serifs are hard to find. It was added to Google Fonts in August 2026.
The family it comes from has an unusual source. Libre Caslon follows the hand-lettered Caslon of 1950s advertising, the way lettering artists drew it for ads, 2 centuries after William Caslon’s own specimens. Narrowed, it gets thrifty with space: set next to Arial, a line of it comes out about 13% shorter.
That matters in a sidebar or a 2 column magazine page, where a normal serif breaks a headline in 3 and this one may hold it to 2.
What the 8 files carry:
- Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold, each with its own italic
- old style and lining figures, in tabular and proportional spacing, and a slashed zero
- standard and discretionary ligatures, ordinals, fractions, super and subscripts
- Latin with the extended accents
Our pick would be headlines and pull quotes in SemiBold, with Libre Caslon Text in the column below.
