Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Paul Hanslow’s italic is the newest piece of Tiro Devanagari Hindi, added when the font was extended for its open release. The rest dates from a 2012 Harvard University Press commission: its Murty Classical Library of India, which reprints old Indian literary and religious writing, needed Devanagari type, and Fiona Ross and John Hudson of Tiro Typeworks drew it. That type had to keep some of the look those texts had in their first printings while still reading cleanly in modern print and on a screen. In 2019 Google asked Tiro to extend and update the Murty fonts as open source, and this family went into Google’s library in March 2022.
Ross and Hudson worked an 8 hour time difference apart, with an ocean and pandemic travel bans between them, over video calls and email. Before drawing they went back to manuscripts and early printed books of the 18th and 19th centuries. The model they settled on was the metal type of the 19th and 20th centuries, the sort the Nirnaya Sagar Press was known for, and they redrew it with broad letters, open counters and firm diagonal strokes and terminals.
What makes this the Hindi cut is the conjuncts, which mix traditional and modern forms.
John Hudson drew the Latin, with the diacritics a scholar needs for transcribing Indian languages, and there are small caps, superscripts and 4 stylistic sets as well. With only 1 weight in roman and italic, we would treat it as a book face and give headlines to something heavier.
