Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Proceedings of the river guild

Eduardo Tunni planned Mate as a text family with a relaxed line, simple in structure, with sharp, generous counters and a medium texture that should keep the page an even color. Mate SC is the small caps member of that family, drawn on traditional proportions, with figures at a medium height that sit well beside the small capitals.

Small caps are a working tool more than a display one. Put them in the running head at the top of a book page, in a table of contents, or on the first words of a chapter after a drop cap, and they look calmer than full capitals while still standing apart from the text.

Tunni said the family can go large too, thanks to the construction details of the letters. 1 style, Latin with the extended accents. A February 2023 update grew the glyph set and added fractions; the font first reached Google Fonts in November 2011.
