Spin, measure, cut the thread
How few strokes can a letter lose and still be read? Jiyeon Park built Moirai around that question, drawing strokes, rearranging them and then deleting them, letter by letter, until each one kept only the minimum lines and slopes needed to be recognized, Hangul and Latin alike. What remains are thin, round lines wrapped around big blocks of empty space, and the effect is light and almost lyrical.
The name comes from the Moirai of Greek myth, the 3 sisters of fate who spin the thread of a life, measure it and cut it. The word means an allotted share, which is a neat fit for a font that hands each letter as little as it can get by on.
JAMO, the Seoul collective that released it, holds workshops where designers build their own typefaces, and it has a taste for experimental Hangul that can stand next to Latin. The set covers 2,781 modern Hangul syllables, a broad Latin, and the Korean standard punctuation and symbols, down to circled numbers and playing card suits. 1 Regular. We would keep it big: those thin lines need size to hold.
