Sequoyah, also known as George Guess, created the Cherokee syllabary in 1821, and it caught on so fast that by 1824 most Cherokee could read and write in it. It has 85 letters and is bicameral, with capital and small forms. Today it serves a language of about 12,000 speakers in the United States.
Noto Sans Cherokee was drawn by the Monotype Design Team for Google’s Noto collection. It covers the Cherokee and Cherokee Supplement blocks and the combining marks that go with them, plus a full Latin.
The range is wide for a script this size: 9 weights, from Thin at 100 to Black at 900. A school or a tribal office can set headings, body text and signs all in Cherokee without switching families. We would start text at Regular and keep Thin for large display.
