Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

To finish a q in Playwrite AR you lift the pen and add a crossbar, the way children in Argentina are taught to. The o carries a small knot, and the ascenders and descender loops run long.
Argentine handwriting for primary schools, like much of South America’s, comes from the tradition of the French Normal schools. It is a round, continuous cursive with upright letters, capitals that connect only partly to what follows, and curved entry strokes on the small letters. Children learn print capitals first, then print lowercase in 1st grade, and move to joined cursive in 1st or 2nd grade, even though the curriculum cares more about composition and comprehension than about handwriting as such.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione’s studio TypeTogether built the font from that model as part of Playwrite, a series that draws on the Primarium research into school handwriting around the world. The connected writing comes from OpenType features, so an app that leaves them switched off will show the letters unjoined.
