Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Cold morning in Hobart
A single national hand was the plan in 1990, when the Australian Education Council backed a style based on Tom Gourdie’s Simple Modern Hand so that a child who moved interstate would not have to relearn the alphabet. It didn’t quite hold. Each state now teaches its own variety of modern cursive, which Australians call “script”, and the 5 main models have drifted apart in the details.
Playwrite AU TAS Guides follows the Tasmanian model, with the writing lines printed into the glyphs: baseline, x-height, ascender, descender. Children trace inside them and get a feel for how tall a letter is supposed to be against its neighbors.
Teachers, try the underscore. It prints the empty lines only, at word-space width.
TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione made it as part of the Playwrite school fonts, which came out of their Primarium research, and it has 1 Regular style with joining handled by contextual alternates. We’d keep it to worksheets and use the plain Playwrite AU TAS anywhere the lines would get in the way.
