One Family

Press the underscore key and Playwrite HU Guides prints only the ruled lines, at the width of a normal word space. A teacher can type a row of underscores after a sample word and get an empty practice line for children to fill in by hand. Every other character comes with the same lines drawn through it, baseline, x-height, ascender and descender, a frame for young writers working out how tall each part of a letter ought to be.
The letters follow Hungary’s model. Children there meet print and cursive together in first grade, and the cursive is upright, wide and round with looped ascenders and descenders. The national curriculum of 2020 names no handwriting model at all; it is the teacher’s manual, Tanítói Kézikönyv, that steers schools to the Educational Authority’s own workbooks (Oktatási Hivatal), and the popular Írás Munkafüzet series among them carries visual and typographic design by László Kajtár.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether drew this as the guided companion to Playwrite HU, inside their Playwrite school fonts, which grew out of the Primarium research into how children are taught to write. 1 Regular weight. In Word, switch on contextual alternates, or the joins will not form.
