Type an underscore in Playwrite DE LA Guides and no character appears, only the ruled lines, exactly as wide as a word space. Teachers will lean on that more than on any letter. A row of underscores becomes an empty practice line for a child to fill by hand, and the same lines sit behind every glyph the font does draw, marking the baseline, the x-height and where ascenders and descenders should stop.
LA is short for Lateinische Ausgangsschrift. There is no German national hand. The states decide, and most of them let a school pick from 3 joined styles, LA being 1 of them, the Vereinfachte Ausgangsschrift and the Schulausgangsschrift the other 2. Since 2010 there has also been Grundschrift, a print-based hand with a few cursive exit strokes that Das Deutsche Schulportal puts at 10% of German schools. This font follows LA only.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione of TypeTogether drew it out of Primarium, their survey of how primary children are taught to write around the world, and Google Fonts added it in November 2024.
The letters join through contextual alternates, so in Word you have to switch those on under Font, Advanced, or the cursive falls apart into separate letters. There is 1 Regular weight and no bold. For a birthday card or a poster you would want the plain Playwrite DE LA without the lines; this version belongs on a worksheet.
