French children learn to write on Séyès lines, a grid of horizontal and vertical guides created in 1892 that fixes the proportions of each letter and how far its ascenders and descenders reach. They meet it in kindergarten, at about 5.
The hand they practice on it is écriture cursive, the traditional vertical cursive and still the most common approach in French schools, whose shapes come from Lettre Ronde, a broad-nib script. The Ministère tried to modernize things in 2013 with 2 digital families in a modern cursive style. Playwrite FR Trad stays with the older upright model and follows the Écriture Droite structure closely.
You see it in the shapes. Ascenders and descenders are very long, the rounds are full and meant to be written slowly, and the capitals are decorative, with R and Y built to join the letter after them. The f has a mirrored loop at the bottom, and m, n, v, w, y and above all z start with a curved entry stroke.
The 4 weights, Thin to Regular, are by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether, and a Guides companion exists for worksheets. For a French classroom handout it is the obvious pick, and those long loops would suit a wedding invitation too, in our view.
