Playwrite SK Guides

Since 1993 the Slovak education ministry has handed its handwriting model to private publishers, and with no official digital version, each publisher made its own for its textbooks. Up to 2020, public funding for textbooks depended on buying from publishers the state had verified. That condition has been dropped, and a consistent font of the model is useful to anyone making materials outside that system.

Playwrite SK Guides is that model with the writing lines built in. Every character carries its baseline, x-height, ascender and descender rules, so a child can judge the proportions of each letter while copying it. The underscore prints the rules alone, a word space wide, which gives a teacher empty lines for practice under a sample word.

It belongs to TypeTogether’s Playwrite school fonts, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione on the back of Primarium’s research into how primary schools teach writing. It is 1 Regular weight, the companion of Playwrite Slovensko. Before you print, check that contextual alternates are on, since the joins depend on them.
