Switch on ss04 and the capital I grows serifs. In a serial number or a login hint, where a capital I can land next to a lowercase l, that is the fix we would make first. It is 1 of 7 stylistic sets in the roman styles of Source Sans Pro: ss01 takes the tail off the l, 2 more swap in a different a and g, ss05 slashes the zero, ss19 brings titling figures for use with capitals, and ss18 gives the ogonek the shape preferred for Athabaskan languages.
Adobe released it in 2012 as its first open-source type, a Paul D. Hunt design meant from the outset for software screens. He started from American gothic type of the News Gothic sort and gave the lowercase more height. Google Fonts listed it from July of that year, and the family was later renamed Source Sans 3.
What is here is release 2.045 of the romans and 1.095 of the italics, 12 styles in all, 6 weights from Extra Light at 200 to Black at 900 with an italic for each. The 2 halves are not equal. A roman covers 1,336 characters, Latin and Vietnamese plus full Greek and Cyrillic, and it has small caps. The italic covers 872, Latin and Vietnamese only, and has no small caps, so a Russian or Greek phrase that needs emphasis will have to go bold. Plan for that before a multilingual manual is half laid out.
Where the 2 overlap they behave alike. Old style and proportional figures, fractions, superscripts and subscripts work in both, and the italic keeps close to the roman’s width, less than 3% narrower across a line, so putting a phrase in italic barely moves the line breaks.
Semi Bold is the weight we’d give to buttons and table headers.
