Taiwan’s space agency, TASA, commissioned 2 typefaces when it rebranded, and TASA Orbiter is the working one of the pair, a neo-grotesque meant to carry the technical precision of space operations. Its sibling is TASA Explorer.
Orbiter is built from a small vocabulary of shapes that keep coming back. The counters are slightly squared and the turns are right angles, which makes the whole thing read as mechanical, in a controlled way.
Local Remote drew the first version between 2022 and 2023: 13 styles over 3 optical sizes, Text and Deck with 4 weights each and Display with 5. In 2025 Weizhong Zhang reworked it. He kept the core character, sharpened the drawing and the readability, and folded the optical sizes into 1 design based on the old Deck, now 5 weights from Regular to Extra Bold. Google added that version in July 2025.
A detail we did not expect: extra glyphs for Taiwanese romanization, both Tâi-lô and POJ, on top of the Core Latin set.
Dashboards and control panels get the most from it, with tabular figures, a slashed zero and case sensitive forms on hand. Note that Regular is as light as it goes.
