Yaldevi is built to save space. Its Latin has a tall x-height, its Sinhala a generous body height, and both keep their ascenders and descenders short, so more text fits on a line and lines can sit closer. The Mooniak team aimed it at titles and short texts on the web.
The Sinhala side takes some liberties. Some glyphs have unusual, experimental shapes, invented so the face could work as display type while still belonging with formal text faces. Rajitha Manaperi and Kosala Senevirathne are credited with Sol Matas, who drew the Latin.
Its personality is mostly neutral, with soft, smooth curves that add some whimsy. Google Fonts funded the first development back in 2015, and the family went live there in June 2021, in 6 weights from Extra Light to Bold.
Headlines, subheads and pull quotes are the brief. We’d add bilingual menus and signs, where the Sinhala and Latin need to share a line without either looking borrowed.
