Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Young Serif comes in 1 weight, and it is a heavy one. Bastien Sozeau, who runs the French studio Noir Blanc Rouge, drew it as an old style serif with Plantin Infant and ITC Italian Old Style somewhere behind it, then rounded off the b and the f at the spots where those letters normally turn sharp. Most of the face’s warmth lives in those 2 curves.
For a family of 1 the OpenType side goes deep. Both figure styles are there, old style and lining, in tabular and proportional widths, along with a slashed zero, ordinals, superscripts, fractions and some discretionary ligatures, so a menu with prices or a recipe calling for 1/3 cup can be set properly without borrowing from another font.
It went up on Google Fonts on 30 August 2023.
Would we set a novel in it? No. It runs wide and dark and has no italic to switch into for emphasis, and pages of it would wear on you. Give it a book jacket or a bakery’s chalkboard menu, where the weight is wanted. The project’s repository has since been working on small caps and real italics, which could change that answer one day.
