The stripes through these letters are bars, the bars of a zoo cage. Yoshimichi Ohira first drew Tokyo Zoo for an exhibition about animals, and he kept the joke when it joined his Zen Fonts collection.
Most of that collection is Japanese, 23 families of mincho, gothic, rounded and display type that Ohira opened to Google Fonts as part of a push, begun in 2019, to fill out its thin Japanese library. Tokyo Zoo belongs to the small Latin side of the set, 3 designs in all, so despite the name there is no Japanese in it, only Latin with the extended accents.
The capitals are tall and the lowercase small. We would set it mostly in capitals, big, on a zoo map or a poster for a children’s event.
