Every stroke in Akaya Telivigala runs the wrong way. Vaishnavi Murthy wrote the Telugu with reverse ductus, each stroke made in the opposite direction to the usual one, and that flips where the thick and thin parts fall. Juan Luis Blanco then drew the Latin to the same contrast angle, so the 2 scripts match.
The model is the fluid, calligraphic Telugu people write by hand on book covers, in graffiti and on notices. Murthy set that against the stiff text style of the first metal types, which Christian missionaries cut for Telugu and Kannada, both scripts descended from Kadamba, and which brought in copperplate-style contrast.
Google Fonts and Dave Crossland commissioned the project. Pria Ravichandran and Liang Hai helped with the OpenType code, and the character set is the reformed Telugu one, enough for modern Telugu and basic Sanskrit. Murthy also conserves and restores books, manuscripts and ephemera, and that work feeds her study of how Indic letters are built.
It is a single weight display face. On a poster or a title it has a lot of life; in a paragraph, that same energy would tire the reader.
