Text in augmented reality floats over whatever the camera sees, a brick wall, a busy street, someone’s kitchen, and Niteesh Yadav designed AR One Sans for that problem. The letters were tested on a range of devices, from expensive headsets down to low resolution setups built around a smartphone, and Yadav settled on low stroke contrast, wide spacing and sturdy shapes that hold up against a cluttered background.
The clever bit is in the weights. They were made as optical weights for high and low resolution screens, and they are duplexed, every weight taking the same horizontal space, so an app can switch weight to suit a display without the text reflowing. A label stays the same length whether it is set in Regular or Bold.
4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, Latin for Western, Central and South-Eastern Europe plus full Vietnamese. Yadav also checked it in longer texts, so it is not limited to 3-word labels, though that is where it would earn its keep.
