5 pixels across, 7 high. That is the smallest grid Petr van Blokland found that can still draw a readable a and e, with 5 rows for the x-height and 1 each for ascenders and descenders, and the whole Bitcount family grows out of those 35-odd dots.
What varies is everything else: single or double pixel stems, upright or slanted, normal or condensed, and the dot itself, large or small, circle or square. Bitcount Ink is 1 branch of that family, here in 9 weights from Thin to Black.
Van Blokland’s own suggestions for using it go well past a retro headline. Because letters within the same variant share their spacing, you can stack 2 or 3 layers in different colors and nudge 1 slightly off center to fake a shadow or a 3D globe. It works as lettering for running LED displays, where the italic imitates the lag of the electronics, and even as a template for physical type built from LEGO bricks or lit windows in an office block.
Contextual alternates, small caps and 6 stylistic sets are there to play with. It sets very wide, so headlines need a short word count.
