Put any diacritic on any base letter, even a pairing no standard keyboard has heard of, and Charis SIL will try to place it properly. Smart font routines move the marks automatically, which is what a linguist writing up a newly documented language or a literacy team printing a first primer needs most.
SIL International set out to cover every current language and writing system that uses Latin or Cyrillic, and the font gets close to the whole Unicode range for those 2 scripts: about 2,450 glyphs, with a large stock of symbols for linguistics and literacy work.
The 4 styles are Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. Small caps are included, along with 5 stylistic sets of alternate letterforms.
Everything is built in the open too, from UFO sources with an open toolkit.
For a dictionary or a schoolbook in a language few fonts were made for, this is a sensible first choice, plain enough to disappear into the reading.
