In most monospaced fonts an i floats alone in a box built to hold an m. Commit Mono keeps the boxes and lets the letters lean. Eigil Nikolajsen calls the trick smart kerning: when a letter stands between 2 neighbors from different width classes, it slides toward the narrower one, and in the example on his site an o moves 44 units. Every glyph still has the same advance, so columns in a diff or a table line up the way they always did.

It lives in the calt feature, and an editor switches it on with its font ligatures setting. Nikolajsen left out the ligatures that are only decoration. What is there does a job, like != drawn as a single not-equal sign.

He describes the face as anonymous and neutral, a coding font that keeps out of the way, and lists Fira Code and JetBrains Mono among the fonts he studied while making it in FontLab 8.

  • 6 weights, Extra Light 200 to Bold 700, each with an italic, 12 files in all.
  • 1,175 characters covering Latin with a wide spread of accents, plus Greek; Cyrillic is announced as coming.
  • 5 stylistic sets with alternate letters.
  • Version 1.143.

Over on commitmono.com a builder bakes your chosen alternates, weight, letter spacing and line height into a custom download. Nikolajsen’s own advice is weight 400 on a dark background and 450 on a light one. Our pick for a laptop screen would be the Regular with smart kerning left on; the shifts are small, and after a day of reading code in it you stop noticing them at all.

Letters, Figures & Code

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
