Firefox OS, Mozilla’s operating system for phones, needed a typeface that would read on whatever handset it landed in, good screens and poor ones with rough rendering alike. Carrois, a type foundry in Berlin, drew Fira for it with Edenspiekermann, and the digitized data is copyrighted to the Mozilla Foundation and Telefonica.
Fira comes in 3 widths, each with italics, plus a monospaced version. This page has the normal width: 9 weights from Thin to Black, all paired with italics.
The OpenType side runs deep for an interface face. True small caps, with a switch that turns typed capitals into them, so an acronym like HTML can sit in a paragraph without shouting. Old style figures beside lining, tabular beside proportional, a slashed zero and 4 stylistic sets. Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese are all covered.
The lowercase is generous, which helps at 13 or 14 px in an app. We would be wary of the 2 thinnest weights for running text on a phone, where hairline strokes break up; from Light upward it reads well, and the Bold carries a heading without help from another family.
