Turn on the stylistic sets in Fustat’s Latin and some letters pick up tailed ends and geometric alternates, a nudge toward the joined flow of the Arabic they were made to sit beside. That order of work explains the family. Mohamed Gaber drew the Arabic from the manuscript Kufi style, Khaled Hosny engineered it, and Laura Garcia Mut then built a Latin to match, borrowing details from the way the Arabic strokes move.
The Arabic keeps the authentic parts of manuscript Kufi and modernizes the rest. It covers a long list of languages written in Arabic script, and the OpenType side is thorough for an Arabic face: stylistic sets, proportional and tabular digits, superscripts and subscripts, fractions.
Garcia Mut’s Latin is a mix of a plain grotesque skeleton and geometric shapes, with very low contrast and a high x-height, and the texture it makes is neutral and friendly. Extended Latin is covered, and there is a slashed zero for anyone setting codes or prices.
7 weights, ExtraLight to ExtraBold.
The designers intended it for screens first. Titles suit its Kufi flavor best, though the Regular holds up in body text too, and for a bilingual shop sign or a menu where Arabic and English share a line we would take it over pairing 2 unrelated fonts.
