Swedish posters of the 20th century gave Yvonne Schüttler the letter shapes for Voltaire, and you can see where it is headed straight away: a condensed, low contrast sans, semi-geometric, upright and narrow enough to stack a long title into a tall column.
Set the same words in Arial and Voltaire needs around 18% less width.
The family has only a Regular, though it has been looked after. An upgrade in January 2023 widened the Latin language coverage and added kerning. Its 861 characters come with a figure kit you rarely see in a single display style: tabular and proportional figures, old style and lining, a slashed zero, fractions, subscripts and superscripts.
The designer says it works from medium text sizes up. We would agree at 16 px and above for a deck or a standfirst, and for anything longer pair it with a roomier text face.
