Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A Proclamation for the Parish
The large Fell Types never quite won over Stanley Morison. In 1951 he granted them a family likeness to the bigger Dutch sizes credited to Christoffel van Dyck, then faulted Peter De Walpergen for overdoing the thick and thin and leaving clumsy spots Van Dyck would not have. Harry Carter, the later historian of the collection, doubted De Walpergen had ever trained as a punchcutter.
That roughness is the reason to use this font now. French Canon was 1 of the large sizes De Walpergen cut for John Fell’s press at Oxford, and the University took it in with the rest of Fell’s bequest in 1686. Igino Marini’s 2007 digitization keeps the uneven strokes, and in this SC version the lowercase keys bring up small capitals.
Marini says to print it at 39 points to match the original. In other words it is a title face, for a title page, a chapter opener or a certificate, set big with a little extra letterspacing. 3 stylistic sets offer alternate forms.
