Tradition says King Sirijonga gave the Limbu people their script in the 9th century. It fell out of use, and in the 18th century Teongsi Sirijonga (1704 to 1741), whom many took for the first king reborn, brought it back. The story goes that lamas in Sikkim killed him in 1741 because of his work on the script. The Limbu scholar Iman Singh Chemjong later named the script Sirijonga in his honor.
SIL International made Namdhinggo so the Limbu language of Nepal would have a font family of its own. Their work on it runs from 2002 to 2022.
It comes in 5 weights from Regular to Extra Bold, with a Latin set alongside, so a primer or a community newsletter can have real hierarchy, headings in Bold and text in Regular.
