Only the roman exists so far. Paolo Biagini says the italic is in development, and until it lands Joan is a 1-style family, which matters if you planned to set a novel in it.
The roman is modeled on a cut by Francesco Griffo, and Biagini calls it a tribute to the Italian style, already a model to follow in the 15th century. Serifs are neat and the terminals sharp. He drew it for books and magazines, and the OpenType set shows it: true small caps with a caps-to-small-caps switch, old style and lining figures in tabular or proportional spacing, a slashed zero, discretionary ligatures and 2 stylistic sets.
How would we use it now? For an essay or a magazine feature where emphasis can go into small caps, Joan is ready. It sets slightly narrow, so a column holds a decent number of words. Do not let a word processor fake the italic, though. Slanted roman would look bad next to letters this carefully drawn.
It has been on Google Fonts since April 2022.
