Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Ɓ, Ɗ, Ɛ, Ɔ and Ŋ all sit in Judson’s character set, and they are there on purpose. Daniel Johnson drew the face for African literacy, and his stated aim was to include every glyph and precomposed combination he knew of for the African languages written in Latin-derived alphabets.
Accents decide whether a font like this is usable. Johnson built OpenType tables to place the diacritics, stacked marks too, so a letter carrying 2 accents gets them one above the other in the right spot. He also took care that each character can be told apart from the next, in the italic as well, which is where look-alike shapes tend to drift together.
The Regular covers the International Phonetic Alphabet.
So a linguist can set a transcription and the prose explaining it in 1 face, and a publisher can print a primer in a language most fonts cannot spell. The family is small: Regular, Italic and Bold, with no Bold Italic, a gap Johnson pointed out himself. It came to Google Fonts in May 2011.
We would keep it on reading jobs, school books or a dictionary with pronunciations, where its care for the marks pays off. For big headlines you have only the Bold to work with, and that runs out fast.
