Pearls from the old city bazaar
Mallanna, the poet this font is named after, sat at the court of King Krishnadevaraya and is counted among the Astadiggajalu, the 8 legends of Telugu letters. Purushoth Kumar Guttula drew the Telugu in 2013, and Silicon Andhra put it out, with Hyderabad type designer Appaji Ambarisha Darbha leading the project.
The letters are round and the stroke keeps the same thickness all the way around, and the people behind it compare them to the pearls Hyderabad is famous for. That even line is what keeps the forms clear when the size goes down, and the font carries the complex Telugu conjuncts that a reader expects in running text.
The Latin letters are borrowed. Vernon Adams drew them and first published them as Nunito. There is only the 1 Regular weight. Headings will need size, since there is no bold to lean on.
