Mate Masie is an Adinkra symbol of the Asante people, usually shown as 4 linked ears, 2 above and 2 below, and its meaning runs something like “what I hear, I keep”. Adam Yeo took that 2 by 2 arrangement as the rhythm for a whole alphabet. The weight in his letters gathers toward the top and every corner is rounded off.
The symbol is about listening and holding on to what you are told, the knowledge of an oral tradition. Yeo wanted the font to celebrate that heritage and still work as an ordinary modern tool, and he hopes more styles will follow. For now there is 1.
The character set reaches past Western Europe to dot-below letters (ẹ, ị, ọ, ụ, ṣ), a barred ɨ and an accented ḿ and ǹ, so a Lagos menu could be spelled properly. The small letters reach about 3/4 of the way up the capitals, big for a face this heavy, so set it large, keep the words short and give it room. A paragraph would turn into a dark slab.
