Menbere has 2 word spaces. Text in the languages written with Ge’ez script gets the wider of the 2 and Latin text the narrower, since Ethiopic reads more easily with more room between words.
The name belongs to Aleme Tadesse’s mother and means seat of honor. Tadesse modernized traditional Ethiopic with low contrast strokes that keep the old gestures, and kept the design free of Latin habits; Eben Sorkin helped with the matching Latin, and Sorkin Type publishes the family.
All the Ge’ez-derived languages are covered, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Bilen and Harari among them. 7 weights run from Thin to Bold in a formal tone, with tabular and proportional figures, and the suggested work is corporate design in print and on screen, interfaces and wayfinding, and mixed Ethiopic and Latin setting.
A bilingual sign in Amharic and English is the job we would hand it first.
