Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

Every Thai letter in Playpen Sans Thai starts with a small hook. Thai type usually ends its strokes in a plain loop or no loop at all, and the hook here is placed where a hand would begin writing the letter, a hint lifted from research into which letterforms read best in graphic novels. It looks casual. It also tells a young reader where the pen goes down.
Sirin Gunkloy and Laura Meseguer worked on the family with TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, and it belongs to the larger Playpen Sans group, which already had Arabic, Devanagari and Hebrew versions beside the original Playpen Sans. Behind it sits more than 2 years of TypeTogether’s research into how primary schools teach handwriting.
Type the same letter 3 times and you will not get 3 identical shapes. Each character has alternates, and a shuffler built into the font swaps them in as you go so repeats do not sit too close together, which is what a hand does without trying. The 8 weights go from Thin to Extra Bold, and the Latin side is large, over 332 languages per TypeTogether.
There is also a small set of “reward icons” drawn as emoji, a pencil, a dinosaur, a birthday cake, a medal and so on, made to match the stroke weights. A teacher could stamp a worksheet with them. We would not set adult prose at any length in it; the jitter of the alternates is charming for a page of a comic and tiring across a long report.
