Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Some languages glue meaning onto a word piece by piece, and the words grow very long. Nicolás Silva drew Poly for those agglutinative languages, and its Latin support reaches in particular to Native South American language families. His brief was a serif that would take tight tracking without falling apart and squeeze more letters onto each line.

The tools for that are short ascenders and a careful balance between the height of the lowercase and the width of each glyph, which buys economy and legibility at small sizes compared with standard web serifs. Contrast is medium.

There is a roman and an italic, and the italic sets noticeably narrower, which suits a long quoted term. Small caps, old style and tabular figures and a slashed zero are in there as well, more than you’d expect from a 2-style family.
