Riot is the sign somebody made at the kitchen table the night before the march, letters uneven and nobody minding. Octavio Pardo drew it as the naive, informal voice in his Protest Types, the set of 4 families he started as a personal study of protest signs.
Its practical secret is shared with 2 of its siblings. Riot, Strike and Guerrilla use identical spacing and kerning, so a slogan set in Riot can be switched to the angrier Strike without the line breaking differently.
1 Regular, Vietnamese included, and more figures than a placard font usually has, old style and lining both, plus fractions. The lowercase is tall, which helps from the back of a crowd.
