Follow Rethink Sans back far enough and you reach Poppins. Hans Thiessen, executive creative director of design at Rethink, an agency founded in Vancouver in 1999, forked DM Sans by Colophon Foundry, and DM Sans had itself been forked from Indian Type Foundry’s Poppins.
Thiessen made it in 2023 with a fairly narrow aim: helping people design with more care inside Google Workspace. That explains the defaults. Figures come out tabular and lining without anyone having to find a setting, the tracking is tuned weight by weight, and 2 styles of circled numbers are a keystroke away, handy for numbered steps on a slide.
10 styles, Regular to ExtraBold with italics, and the italics hold the width of their romans. Nothing lighter than Regular.
If you live in Docs and Slides, we would reach for it for proposals and decks. Outside them it is a pleasant geometric sans with good habits.
