Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Georgia was one of the first serifs drawn to make reading easier on the coarse screens of its day, and it was among the original Core Fonts for the Web. Google’s article introducing Roboto Serif starts there, and the comparison is fair: this is a serif for reading comfortably on today’s screens that is equally at home in print.
Greg Gazdowicz drew it at Commercial Type as the serif member of the Roboto superfamily, minimal and functional enough that Google suggests it even for app interfaces. The full design is variable across weight, width and optical size. Here you get 18 static styles, Thin through Black, each with its italic.
It is a broad face. A lowercase sentence sets close to 18% wider than Georgia, so it fills a line quickly; in a narrow column, drop the size a step.
What makes it good to work with is the figure set. Old style for running text, lining for headings, tabular for tables, proportional where spacing matters more than alignment, and a slashed zero for anything with codes in it. Add 6 stylistic sets and you can tune it a fair way. Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese are covered.
We would set an ebook or a long report in Regular with Light for captions, and use the Black only for the cover.
