Danh Hong drew Siemreap for Khmer OS, a project built around the idea that Cambodians should be able to learn and use computers in their own language. It began in his Khmer OS font set, and it is named after Siem Reap, the city in the northwest that is the gateway to the Angkor temples.

Khmer asks a lot of a font. It is an abugida that came from the Pallava script, its earliest dated inscription is from the year 611, and modern Khmer has 33 consonants. Nearly every consonant also has a subscript form for writing clusters, and words in a sentence usually run together with no spaces between them.

Hong has spent years on problems like these. Besides fonts for Khmer and other Southeast Asian languages, he has written a converter from the old Limon encoding to Unicode, a word segmenter used in a Khmer spellchecker and a library for the Khmer lunar calendar.

The download here is Regular only, and it holds Khmer alone with no Latin letters, so pair it with a Latin font for mixed text.
