Exhibition opens in Weimar
In 1923 the Bauhaus put on its first exhibition, and Herbert Bayer lettered the title on the cover of its catalog, Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar 1919–1923. Brian LaRossa and Erica Carras of Type Brut drew a complete alphabet in answer to that lettering.
It is capitals only, clean cut, with proportions that don’t follow the usual rules, and it sets narrow. There’s a small irony in it. Bayer is better known for a universal alphabet he drew later, between 1925 and 1930, that had lowercase letters and no capitals at all.
Beyond the caps there are figures, punctuation, symbols and the common Latin accents, plus alternate widths for some letters and discretionary ligatures. Eli Heuer helped with production. A poster headline is the natural home for it; we’d stack 2 or 3 short lines and let the odd proportions show.
