Why a separate Marathi font when Tiro already has a Devanagari? Because Marathi literary publishing still stacks many conjuncts vertically, in the traditional way, and this version of John Hudson and Fiona Ross’s design does the same. A reader used to Marathi books would notice the difference at once.

The Devanagari underneath is shared with its siblings. It goes back to the type Tiro made for the Murty Classical Library of India and to the metal type the Nirnaya Sagar Press used across the 19th and 20th centuries, drawn broad, with open counters and firm diagonal strokes.

Paul Hanslow adapted an italic for the open release. The Latin is Hudson’s and comes with the diacritics for transcribing Indian languages, small caps, contextual alternates and 4 stylistic sets. For a Marathi novel or an edition with romanized notes, we would reach for it ahead of a general Devanagari.
